2023 GenAI RoundTable Report

In November 2022 with the launch of ChatGPT, it felt like there was a global sharp intake of breadth. Tech we had seen before came to us tested and risk adverse but, this tech engaged us all in a first ever global beta test!

At CLI we knew early on that we had an important role to play as a neutral, education led stakeholder.

We ran this first Roundtable series from March to July 2023. We engaged with 179 people from 14 sectors in the legal ecosystem through 17 virtual Roundtables: lawyers in private practice and business leaders in solo, small, mid-tier and large law firms; corporate inhouse and government inhouse counsel; legal consultants; legaltech developers + legal technologists; legal educators (Australian law school leaders, practical legal education heads of courses and clinicians); emerging legal leaders; innovation and transformation professionals; legal operations professionals; community legal centres; pro bono and low bono law firms; and legal profession regulators.

This first Roundtable series was and remains one of the most comprehensive small group, early benchmarking initiatives about this tech in the APAC legal ecosystem.

This Report captures the cumulative key takeaways from the 2023 Roundtable series. We’ve also made available the questions we asked in Appendix A and the key takeaways from each session (by sector) in Appendices B-O.

After this Roundtable series, we launched CLI’s Legal Generative AI Initiative. Here are some ways you can engage with us on this topic today for FREE:

  1. Legal Generative AI Global Community: a learning community for everyone in the legal ecosystem to access relevant, lightly curated daily content and immediately connect with people everywhere.
  2. Legal GenAI Clinic – Experiments and Use Cases: a bi -monthly online meet up to share experience, learn, and connect on legal GenAI in action.

Please also watch/listen to our FREE AI for Legal Series: a multi-episode video and podcast series on the fundamentals of AI for law students, lawyers, and allied legal professionals.

To everyone who attended and contributed to the 2023 Roundtable series, thank you SO much!
